An exploratory journey into the world of old school country ballads

Here’s a tune I came up with around last Christmas. In the spirit of the season, I was listening to a lot of Tom Waits, finding myself particularly drawn to rootsier ballads, especially “Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night.”

At the same time, I saw an episode of Miami Ink where the gang went to Coney Island to tattoo some of the sideshow performers.

Suffice to say, it didn’t take long before my subconscious started singing the praises of the women in the sideshow in a decidedly Waits-ian manner. Now, I’m no Tom Waits, to say the very least, but I tried to record the song staying as true to the original inspiration as I could.

There’s some words I thought I’d never say. Oh well, it would appear that I don’t seem to have any real control over the ideas that pop into my head that eventually grow into songs. So I was as stunned as anyone when I woke up one morning a couple of years ago with this little ditty rolling around in my noggin.
