Studio Log: 20080811

Perhaps I’m biting off more than I can chew
Well, for those of you who can’t actually hear what I’m doing in the basement (which I hope is most of you), it looks like I’m just talking about making music and not actually doing anything about it. But in truth, I’ve put in a string of late nights in the studio to prove otherwise.
I was up for a couple of hours last night putting a whole slew of vocal overdubs on “We All Agree,” which will end up being the inaugural “Song of the Month” release on September 1. As luck would have it, just as soon as I decided to call it quits and sneak into bed my muse started suggesting all these Beach Boys-like backgrounds I should be working into the chorus. I’m not even sure I can sing them, but I guess that’s what I have to try to recreate tonight.
Also yesterday, my wife and I were watching the Olympics on CBC when we caught a commercial for the “Hockey Night in Canada” theme song competition. Well, after some reasoned discussion - and a few outbursts of “Holy crap! $100,000!” - it has been decided that I will be submitting at least two pieces for consideration in this contest. One piece is pure me, which means it sounds a lot like Eels, with a boatload of obnoxiously silly rhymes which pretty much guarantees it won’t be taken seriously, and the other one is a fairly punk instrumental which just might stand a chance.
As luck would have it, the submission deadline for the Hockey Night song battle is August 31, the day before my first “Song of the Month” is due. And if you think that’s tight, I could be royally screwed if I’m selected for the Song Fu Challenge, which announces its list of competitors tomorrow (”Pick me, pick me, pick me!”).
